tirar ( tee-rahr' )

verb ( to throw, to throw out; to pull )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Tira la basura en el basurero.

Throw the garbage in the garbage can.

2. El inodoro en casa de mi abuela es de esos viejos de los que tienes que tirar la cadena.

The toilet in my grandmother's house is one of those old ones on which you have to pull the chain.

Ayer mi esposa me tiró una herramienta. Por desgracia, ella no tuvo buena puntería.

Yesterday, my wife threw me a tool. Unfortunately, her aim wasn't good.

Me di cuenta desmasiado tarde por qué mi marido le gusté a mi...No fue por mis ojos azules.

I was a bit slow picking up on why my husband fancied me ( pulled me) . It wasn't for the sake of my blue eyes.

Hola Annie. Nunca había escuchado "tirar" así. En México dicen "tirar la onda", pero "Fancied me" como "por qué le gusté". Entonces sería... por qué le gusté a mi...-- - 00e46f15, May 15, 2014
Suzy' we say ' to pull someone' meaning that they are very attracted to you. I just said fancied because ' to pull ' in this sence is a bit vulgar although very common. - annierats, May 15, 2014

Sospecho que más de unos pocos aficionados de los Clippers tenían ganas de tirar algo a la tele anoche después de ver lo malas que eran las decisiones de los árbitros durante los minutos finales del partido.

I suspect more than a few Clippers fans felt like throwing something at the television last night after seeing how bad the referee’s calls were during the last minutes of the game.

I hate it when they make bad calls. I don't know how they get away with it. - rac1, May 14, 2014
Oh, everyone makes errors, but when they are in a string that all go against one team and change the outcome it is bad. Probably doesn't - bosquederoble, May 14, 2014
Make sense to anyone who didn't see it, but it offers some grammatical issues that I am not sure of in the Spanish and so I'm hoping to see if I got it correct. - bosquederoble, May 14, 2014
I probably normally would have used either lanyard or arrojar in this case. - bosquederoble, May 14, 2014
That would be lanzar, it is the automatic spell checker. - bosquederoble, May 14, 2014

Mi marido se ofrece para enseñarle a la mujer de Noetol algo de tiro al blanco. Es su deporte favorito.

My husband offers to teach Noetol's wife a little about target shooting. It's his favourite sport.

A veces pienso que debo dejar de tratar hacer demasiadas cosas al mismo tiempo y tirar la toalla.

Some days I think I should stop trying to do so many things at once and call it quits.
