The word struggle
What would be the best way to say: "He struggles to do good in Math class". I know "struggles" means esfuerzos or luchas but for some reason I see struggles as a negative, for example, What are your struggles? Is something you are not your best at or keeps you from being your best, and esfuerzos as positive for example, Me he esforzado para obtener esta meta, would be something positive. What do you think? Thank you!

Perhaps when you are finished you'll have a preferred way to say what you would like. Me, I was drawn pretty strongly to the use of "luchar" in the circumstances you describe.
