sumido ( soo-mee'-doh )

adjective ( immersed, submerged )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Yes, YES! I have been suspicious of Facebook for years! I'm glad that there are people that share my opinion! - 00ffada9, May 9, 2014
As someone who does not have a Facebook account, I find it getting more and more difficult- although so far most of the things like restaurant menus are still available if one is not logged into an account. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
Sorry to disappoint you,HCA.I am not suspicious enough to get rid of FB! But I am definitely not an addict. The post is dedicated to my sister(a real fb maniac!!!)..Jejejejeje.. :) - nahian003, May 9, 2014
I love it!!! Hahahaha - rac1, May 9, 2014
I don't have a facebook acount either. I think it could lead to some very devastating situations. - 007c5fc1, May 9, 2014

Durante inundaciones sería mejor no sumirse en conversaciones muy largas por teléfono.

During flooding it would be better not to immerse oneself in very long telephone calls.

Como un marinero submarino, viajé por todo el mundo bajo (nuestro barco se sumergió en el océano).

As a submarine sailor, I traveled all under the world (our boat was immersed in the ocean).

I admire you, our son was in the Navy for some years, and that was tough enough, underwater must be much worse. - annierats, May 9, 2014
I miss the comradery of my shipmates, but not living in a sealed tube that goes "Ah-ooga! Ah-ooga! Dive! Dive!" - jrschenk, May 9, 2014
Indeed, it was the lack of personal space, or any space, which frightened me more than the vvarious arms carried.. - annierats, May 9, 2014
Go Navy. Although I have to admit I had a private stateroom across from the Captain on my ship- it was still odd having a sign discussing the depleted uranium on the other side of one of my walls. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
Hey, XO! (Executive Officer), yes, all that, and Annie, I had private space... a 4 inch deep pan for personal property under my mattress. ;) - jrschenk, May 9, 2014

Thankfully I haven't any Spanish papers. But I've got a research paper, several book analyses, a book report thing, and a dozen or so compositions. - Ghosthawk, May 9, 2014

Muchos creen que hay un avión de Malasia sumido en el Océano Índico y algunos creen que valdría una cantidad enorme de dinero entender por qué. Hay otros que creen que en vez de gastar dinero en buscarlo, sería mejor gastar el dinero en mejorar los sistemas de localización para todos los aviones del mundo.

A lot of people believe that there is a Malaysian plane submerged in the Indian Ocean, and many believe that it will be worth an enormous amount of money to understand why. There are others that believe that instead of spending money in searching for it, it would be better to spend the money in improving the tracking systems of all the world’s planes.

I think if they found it, it would help. Understanding what went wrong could aid in preventing simular occurrences. We can learn a great deal from our mistakes. - rac1, May 9, 2014
I tried to write my sentence so as to not take either side. For pure curiosity, not knowing and all the questions regarding whether it was intentional or a mechanical issue, it's like reading a mystery novel without getting to read the end. :) - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
I agree. :) - rac1, May 9, 2014
Regarding the money- I think I Read 160 million- there are many things in this world that are more in need of fixing. Regarding what happened, all theories sound outrageous, that is what makes it so interesting, nothing make sense. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
It's why we all want to know. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
Tu español es excelente. Espero que tu puedes ayudarme un día con esta lengua. - languagenut, May 9, 2014
Since you ask for my help- "Espero que puedas ayudarme"- no subject pronoun, it is obvious (otherwise it sounds like I am the only one who can help) and subjunctive as you are expressing a desire, not declaring a fact. :) - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
I try to help when I can, but only when asked, as I am not a native, and only with the acknowledgement that sometimes I am wrong. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014
I also would say "algún día" but have no idea if that change is needed- it is easier to know one right way than which of many options is wrong. - bosquederoble, May 9, 2014

There is no evidence left of the beautiful farms in the Mactaquac Valley that were completely submerged in order to build a hydro electric plant.

En la valle de Mactequac no se tiene evidencia dejados atrás de las fincas bonitas que estaban sumido completamente con el fin de construir una planta hidroelétrica.

Well, Margharite, would a nuclear plant be beter? Whichever way, you lose something. Sadly. - annierats, May 9, 2014
How unfortunate. - languagenut, May 9, 2014
@annie...I was not making a judgement on electricity or nuclear. I was simplay making a statement that some beautiful farms had been taken over by the government. Just using the word of the day, that's all. - 007c5fc1, May 9, 2014

Es muy emocionante estar cerca de ballenas. He estado en un barco muy cerca de dos ballenas que estaba jugando en el mar y también nadando subido debajo del barco.

It is very exciting to be close to whales. I have been in a boat very close to two whales which were playing in the sea and also swimming submerged under the boat.
