escuchar ( eh-skoo-chahr' )

verb ( to listen )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. ¿Has escuchado el nuevo disco de Beirut? ¡Es fantástico!

Have you heard the new album from Beirut? It's great!

2. Odio cuando hay una persona en el tren que cree que todos los demás quieren escuchar su música.

I hate it when there's someone on the train who thinks that everyone wants to listen to his music.

Tuve tantas ganas de ver la última telenovela de la BBC, Jamaica Inn, que fue estrenado el sabado pasado. ¡Que gran decepción! Aunque le subí a todo volúmen al máximo, como si fuera sorda, no entendí ni una palabra porque los campesinos de la telenovela hablan un dialecto desconocido. No quiero escuchar otro capítulo.

I was really looking forward to seeing the latest BBC series, Jamaica Inn, which started last Saturday. What a disappointment! Even though I turned the sound up to max, as if I were deaf, I couldn't understand a word because the rural folk in the series speak a totally unknown dialect. I don't want to listen to another episode. . enter image description here

Si escucho la música rock cuando hago bicicleta estática, hago el ejercicio con más fuerza y rapidez. Pero si escucho un documental en español, mejoro lentamente mi comprensión de la lengua hablada. Normalmente hago lo último porque quiero seguir mejorando el español.

If I listen to rock music when I ride my exercise bicycle, I do the exercise with more force and speed. But if I listen to a Spanish language documentary, I slowly improve my comprehension of the spoken language. Usually I do the latter because I want to continue improving in Spanish.

Si tu lengua materna es el inglés, se te podría dificultar el escuchar y entender español sin traducir mentalmente las palabras al inglés. Sin embargo, con el tiempo puede ser logrado.

If you're a native speaker of English, it can be difficult to listen to and understand Spanish without mentally translating the words to English. However, with time, it is possible.

Puede ocurrir el caso cuando no te gusta ni ver, ni decir algo , ni escuchar lo que ha ocurrido

The case may occur when you don't like neither to see, nor to say something, nor listen to what happened,

Yay, it's tongue-twisting time:

Escuchábase el cuchicheo de la flacucha cucha que nunca escucha y que parece mas bien una chucha sin escucha ni escuchador.

There it was, the babbling coming from a starving and deaf old lady, always refusing to listen everyone, who looks like a deaf rat with no listeners.

Escuchábanse los barrotes trinar por los golpes de las cucharas, cucharidades propiedad de los flacuchos prisioneros, y entonces tan fuerte el estruendo era, que las flacuchas chuchas y su chucheo a duras penas se escuchaban.

Hubbub from spoons banging against the bars, coming from the spoons of the starving inmates, then the rumbling thru the dungeons was so loud, that even the constant screeching coming from starving rats was hardly heard.

Cucharidad ( Cuchara + idad ): slang, the 'fact' of being a spoon, it's like applying the same concept of 'stability' into a spoon [ Stability/Estabilidad ( **Estabilidad = Estable + Idad): the fact or 'being/remain stable' ]**

Chucheo: slang, to behave or sound like a rat ( rata ). Very useful because ' Rateo ' is the fact of commiting robbery.

Regards.
