Usage of "el".
Hola amigos, As I am learning Spanish, I have noticed that sometimes the use of the definite article "el" is a bit different than how we use it in English. Perhaps someone could help me clarify why "el" is used the way it is in the following sentence. "Mi compañero color favorite es el azul." In English we would naturally say "My companion's favorite color is blue". Thank you in advance for your help.

My opinion:
In Spanish, even more than in English, a noun is dropped and the adjective is left as the stand-in for it, with the article. In English sometimes we use (one) as the stand-in for the noun, Which dress do you like? The blue (one)- there is no such thing in Spanish.
So if I rewrite your sentence the way I would write it:
El color favorito de mi compañero es el azul.
It is short for:
El color favorito de mi compañero es el (color) azul.
