Should there be a subjunctive verb at some point in there?

.... se han mejorado / .... se hayan mejorado.
Both are correct. The choice is a matter of nuance between absolute fact (indicative) and most likely, possibly, etc (subjunctive).

Aunque + subjunctive = even if
