Where is salsa dance from?

I am going to research this, but this is just test to see what people say. Where do you think salsa dancing is from, and if you don't mind can you also tell me where you're from?

Asking because in my experience, Cubans will say salsa is Cuban, Puerto Ricans say it's from Puerto Rico or from Hispanic neighborhoods in New York and made its way back to other countries.

It is a long discussion. And as you say: cubans will say salsa is Cuban; Puerto Ricans say it´s from Puerto Rico or from Hispanic neighbourhoods in New York.

And I think both are right, at least in part.

The root of the rhythm known as 'salsa' is undoubtedly the cuban 'son'. I have heard that the son and other rhythms of Cuban origin were brought by Cuban musicians to New York, where they were fussed with the jazz in the 1940s. This cuban orchestras became very popular in the ballrooms of New York, among Hispanic Americans in the 1950s. In the 1960s, after the Cuban revolution, many cuban musicians moved to New York and formed bands with other Puerto Rican musicians. So, Puerto Rican and Cuban rhythms were mixed, thus giving birth to the salsa.

The best story of the origins and evolution of the salsa was writen by César Miguel Rondón: El libro de la salsa.

I am mexican and I love salsa, and I am very keen on "son montuno" and other cuban rhythms such as mambo, danzón, cha cha chá, and so on.

From Wikipedia

Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in New York with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico. The movements of salsa have its origins in Cuban Son, Cha cha cha, Mambo and other dance forms, and the dance, along with the salsa music,[1][2][3] originated in the mid-1970s in New York.[4]
