What I'm trying to say is "I spend a lot of time studying it"

Gastar is to waste and if you ar talking about wasting time you would use perder. You never use gastar when associating with time. I waste a lot of time studying it, you would say, "Pierdo mucho tiempo estudiandolo." Hope this helps man! Keep it up! - jphip, Mar 27, 2014

jphip is absolutely right! The correct sentence is:

Me paso mucho tiempo estudiándolo (Or just: Paso mucho tiempo estudiándolo)

In this case lo is a pronoun that substitutes the direct complement, "eso", and it should be added to the verb: estudiándolo.

I would say, "Lo estoy estudiando mucho" but I am just a low intermediate Spanish speaker. Im sure you will get much better answers from the natives and I will learn also!
