What are some ways to say "break up [a relationship]" in Spanish?

Question

I know of "negar", and I think I've heard "cortar" used the same way but I'm not sure.

Romper, cortar o dejar

He roto/cortado con mi novia. Lo he dejado con mi novia.

Hemos roto/cortado. Lo hemos dejado. ("lo" se da por supuesto que es "el compromiso", "la relación", etc.)

Por ejemplo:

• ¿Qué tal tu relación con Laura?
• Lo hemos dejado.

A pesar de que "relación" es femenino y podría (o debería) decirse "la hemos dejado", se dice "lo".

• ¿Qué tal lo tuyo con Laura?
• Lo hemos dejado. Hemos roto.

Well ,, according to me,, it should be ,, romper el/un amorío ,, if it is a love affair. And romper un compromiso ,, if it is an engagement. And if it is just a passing infatuation u may say ... romper la amistad.

But I have never heard this in context ,, this is just my logical conjecture .. I have sent a text message to my friend who is a native ,, when she responds back I will tell u the exact native way .. Good Luck
