Has anyboby ever seen "partir" used like this before?
El emperador bizantino Diógenes había partido sobre los seldjúcidas con un ejército de más de 200.000 hombres
I'm not really sure how you would translate this into English.... any ideas guys? Thanks, Mark.

Ok I think I have worked it out. The sentence is correct. Number 5 on the link above says that Partir can mean :To attack in combat or battle. Sobre can also be used to indicate an attack towards somebody as in the example s below.
Juego de caza en el cual el jugador debe disparar sobre unos patos en pleno vuelo.
Hunting game in which the player must shoot the flying ducks.
Han disparado sobre el presidente.
They have shot the president.
So the translation would be something like:
El emperador bizantino Diógenes había partido sobre los seldjúcidas con un ejército de más de 200.000 hombres
The byzantine emperor had attacked the seljuks with an army of 200,000 men.
I think lol....
I think it means that Diógenes marched on the seleucid army, or marched onward. Does it make sense in English?
It doesnt make sense...Do you mean, perhaps "había partido HACIA los Selúcidas"....in that case "partir" can be translate as "set off"....still, its not the best use of the word. Try to use "marchado" (to march)
