I would love to go there. I have been to Arcos de la Frontera Jerez and Sevilla which are in the area. It is famous for a certain querkiness and of course the sea and the sun. I love the poetry of Rafael Alberti who was part of the generation of poets who lived for many years in exile during the time of Franco [he went to Argentina] However he returned to Spain and only recently died at his home in El Puerto de Santa María[opposite Cadiz]. his websiteLook up Andalucian poets. Sevilla and Jerez are famous for flamenco but of course flamenco has reached Cadiz. Sherry is popular. I like Manzanilla which is made in Sanlucar and El Puerto de Santa Maria - it is dry and tangy. Here is a well known song + photos [I prefer Pasion de Vega] [habaneras de Cadiz]2 I use the resources of Notes in Spanish and Notes in Spain - run by an Englishman and his wife who is from Madrid. They have regularly posted and raved about Cadiz, though now they are parents they also like the cooler Northern Spain. Here is a video they have made: Video Given the fierce heat of Southern Spain in the summer you have made the right choice to be on the coast - but do fit in a weekend in Sevilla and try and make trips to Cordoba and Granada. Cadiz is famous for the celebrations of carnival but obviously that is in February. Finally look through the photos of Mike Randolph - my internet is very slow so I haven't checked the ones for Cadiz. It will give you ideas of the area photos Oh and check out a new site how to speak andaluz ...

The whole Costa de la Luz is lovely.

You will enjoy it. I've actually only been to Cádiz itself once, it is famous for it's friendly people ( Los gaditanos). As I only visited the police-station, I couldn't say. Because it is surrounded by sea there are no hideous new-build areas and it has a lot of charm. The underground car park is very expensive, you're charged by the second, almost. However, if you're living there I don't suppose that will be a problem. It is by- passed by most tourists, being out on a limb. The cruise-ships all call in at the harbour and I believe that twice a week all the passengers flood into town, but then they leave and Cádiz returns to the gaditanos. Communications are poor, it is off the main bus-route and there is no railway. Obviously there are local buses that connect to the main routes.

Hi Annie. I was wondering, how do the natives pronounce the "d" in Cádiz? Is it sort of a voiced "th" that we have in English? I've never paid much attention to Spanish d's, and how they are pronounced, but maybe it's time that I should. Thanks! - Esteban3304, Mar 24, 2014
You only need to go to Zorilla Street to fall in love with Cádiz - padrin, Mar 24, 2014
I have never noticed, they just say 'd' or , often inthe south, drop consonants, butnot in the middle of aname. - annierats, Mar 24, 2014
Annie are you ok, are you ok Annie? lol - you omitted a space between 3 pairs of words!!! Seriously, I do plan to work on my d's in order to have less of an accent when I speak Spanish. - Esteban3304, Mar 25, 2014

I have not been to Cádiz but I was twice in the hospital in Puerto Real which is nearby.

I was staying in a small town called Barbete but got sick.

All I can say is that the people there were great - from the Hotel staff to the paramedics, ambulance drivers and the nurses and doctors in the hospital.

So don't worry about needing medical care while in that part of Spain the Costa de la Luz.
