presentir ( preh-sehn-teer' )

verb ( to sense in advance, to have a premonition )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. En la mitología griega, Casandra presintió la destrucción de Troya, pero nadie le creyó.

In Greek mythology, Cassandra foresaw the destruction of Troy, but no one believed her.

2. No podría decir el por qué, pero presiento que éste será un año bueno.

I couldn't say why, but I have a feeling this is going to be a good year.

Dicen que los animales presienten las tormentas y los terremotos ; ellos tienen mejores instintos que los seres humanos..

They say that the animals have a presentiment of storms and earthquakes; they have better instincts as human beings.

Tienes razon! May I offer an alternative? They say that animals have premonitions of storms and earthquakes; they have better instincts than humans. - GabriellaMonique, Mar 23, 2014
I think it is not instinct but that their senses are more acute. :) - ian-hill, Mar 23, 2014

Presiento que cuando esté cara a cara ante mi Señor, voy a olvidar todas las preguntas que tengo en mente hacerle y todas las explicaciones que quisiera que me diera.

I have a feeling that when I am face to face with my Lord, I am going to forget all the questions that I had planned to ask Him.

Incluso antes de que abriera la boca, tuve el presentimiento de que no me gustaría que iba a gustar lo que el novio de mi hija tenía que iba a decir.

Even before he opened his mouth, I had a premonition that I would not like what my daughter's boyfriend had to say.

Todo el mundo quiere saber el futuro. Hay personas que dicen que pueden presentir lo que va a ocurrir. No sé si eso sea verdad, pero a veces he escuchado unas historias que son inexplicables. En todo caso, quizás es mejor no saber el futuro: ¡Puede que sea malo!

Everyone wants to know the future. There are people who say they can foresee what is going to happen. I don't know if that is true, but sometimes I have heard stories that are inexplicable. Anyway, perhaps it is better not to know the future: it might be bad!

Not to be picky, but FYI, the original sentence should be "por qué," not "porqué" since it's an interrogative (Why?).

El mejor manera presentir el futuro es crear ello.

The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Hi Susy, to " scratch my head" signifies that I am confused or puzzled about something . Maybe it works just in English but not Spanish. I used the phrase during the week with "rascar" , just wanted to see if it was ok. Thanks :) - aocroc, Mar 23, 2014

Se me ha occurrido que pudiera hacer dinero como una clarividente porque no necesitaría ninguna formación por éste trabajo ademas de que pudiera ganar mucho dinero si sólo tuviera la habilidad de prevenir el futuro. Lo único que me hace falta son los presentimientos.

It has occurred to me that I would be able to make money as a clairvoyant because I wouldn't need any special education for this work and I might be able to earn a lot of money if only I had the ability to foresee the future , but I don't feel premonitions.
