ancho ( ahn'-choh )

adjective ( wide )

Sylyon1976 will correct the Spanish sentences as her time permits. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Con cada año que pasa, la cintura se me pone más ancha.

With every passing year, my waistline gets wider.

2. Las secuoyas tienen troncos tan anchos que es posible conducir un coche por el centro de algunas.

Sequoias have trunks that are so wide that it's possible to drive a car through the center of a few of them.

I do believe this elephant is a smidge too wide for this door.

Creo que éste elefante es un poquito demasiado ancho para esta puerta.

Es muy raro que a las mujeres les gustan los hombres con espalda ancha, pero a los hombres no les interesa mucho las mujeres de ésta complexión.

It's strange, but women love men with broad shoulders, but men are less interested in women of this type.

I wonder if the English word "anchor" has anything to do with the Spanish word "ancho".

Me pregunto si la palabra inglesa 'anchor' tiene algo que ver con la palabra español 'ancho'.

"Anchor" quiere decir "ancla" (latin ancŏra) y "ancho" (latin 'amplus' -- amplio) significa "wide". Uno puede deducir que nada qué ver. Podrías usarlas juntas: El ancla es ancha. jajajaj -- Saludos! - 00e46f15, Mar 20, 2014

En mi caso, las palabras "carga ancha" tienen un significado diferente.

In my case, the words "wide load" take on a new meaning.

Hace poco mi esposo y yo compramos un sofá. Estaba preocupada porque pensé que era demasiado ancho para caber por la puerta.

Not that long ago, my husband and I bought a couch. I was worried because I thought it was too wide to fit through the doorway.

Qué suerte que esta moda con las faldas anchas ya pasó, porque una dama así vestida no podría haber entrado a una casa de éstos tiempos.

What luck that this fashion with this wide skirts are already gone, because so dressed lady could not enter in a modern house.
