What is the differences with 'pero' & 'sino'?

What is different with PERO & SINO. i thought that both means 'but' in English. I can't find the differences!

pero = but

sino = but rather

María es alta pero no es fuerte. Maria is tall, but she isn't strong.

Julia no es alta sino baja. Julia isn't tall, but rather she's short.
