What does "ya" mean and how do you use it??

Question

I've heard "ya" being used in Spanish and someone tried to explain but I forgot what he said and simply didn't understand the concept in the first place. I know that you only use it in "yo" form, but why? Why can't you use it in any other forms? Where do you place it in a sentence (before the verb, after the infinitive, before the subject, etc)? What does it even mean? Thanks!
