"Una accion continua en curso"
In lesson 4.14 this is said to be a situation where gerunds are used. To me it literally means "an action continues in course". I take it to mean something like "continuing actions", but I don't know why it's stated the way it is. Is it perhaps an idiom?

Yes it is an idiom, meaning 'ongoing', 'current' or 'in progress'.
