Adverb Instead

Before writing the post, I should say that I know how to use the word instead in prepositional phrases ( i.e. Quiero esa taza en vez o en lugar de esta), but my question, how do you use the adverb Instead? Such as in the sentence, I want that one instead.

We sometimes eat rice instead of potatoes.
A veces comemos arroz en vez de patatas.
Your sentence "I want that one instead" is meaningless / incomplete unless it is already known what the alternative is.
It is a sentence that cannot stand on its own.
I want potatoes instead.
Quiero patatas en su lugar.

I don't know if you're new to English or not, but the sentence "I want that one instead" is a sentence that can stand on it's own (at least in english). In English, you don't have to know what the alternative is because I already set up at least - Rickyavalos16, Mar 2, 2014
