I have studied spanish in college. It was only one year and I have forgotten most of it.

He estudiado español en la universidad. Era sólo un año y he olvidado la mayor parte.

I am trying to learn again and have bought the book "Basic Spanish" by Dorothy Richmond.

Ahora estoy tratando de aprender de nuevo y he comprado el libro "Basic Español" de Dorothy Richmond.

Both are correct! ¡Ambos son correctos!

Notice that "mapa" is masculine. Observe que mapa es masculino.

I think it should be / creo que deberia ser:

Hay un libro sobre el escritorio.
