Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca Practice

Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca Practice

I got this idea from Kiwigirl, even though she doesn't know it. smile

I thought it would be cool, and a good exercise for some of us to practice our Spanish by recording and posting it here. This is good way for beginners like myself to practice, but it would be nice if some "pros" could record too, so that we can hear native Spanish speakers and/or people who speak Spanish really good.

So here is what you are to record. You can record in Spanish and English or just Spanish. Please upload the file to Vocaroo and then paste the link for the recording here.

Cultivo Una Rosa Blanca

      Por Jose Marti

*Cultivo una rosa blanca

En julio como en enero,

Para el amigo sincero

Que me da su mano franca.

Y para el cruel que me arranca

El corazon con que vivo,

Cardo ni ortiga cultivo,

Cultivo una rosa blanca.*

Have fun!

Really good idea!!!! My internet connection won't allow me onto the site, but it's still a great idea! - 00ffada9, Feb 13, 2014
You can record in an offline recorder, and if you need to post it on a different site that is fine. :) - actorgirl, Feb 13, 2014
Actorgirl, set us agood example! - annierats, Feb 13, 2014
Ahhhh! It would not be a good example. :) I will do it when I get a chance. :) - actorgirl, Feb 13, 2014
Very good idea. I just found your post today. You should do another one. - 007c5fc1, Feb 15, 2014

Well, somebody has to start. I find the microphone terryifying, actually. - annierats, Feb 13, 2014
You did a good job. At least people coulnd't see you! Thanks for facing your fears! :) - actorgirl, Feb 13, 2014
I don't mind speaking to actual people, it's sitting there,on your own, with a machine... - annierats, Feb 13, 2014

Nice job Annie, I can hear a little of your native accent underneath but I think that adds a lovely uniqueness to how you sound. Re pronunciation i'm not sure if you wanted any critique but if you're keen there were just a couple of little things I heard - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
With the first 'rosa' I could hear more of an English 'z' sound but the last one was perfect with lovely soft 's'. Amigo and ortigo both seemed to have an 'e' sound replacing the 'i'. And like Actor Girl I would just say let loose with those double rr - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
sounds which are also made when a word starts with 'r' - unleash that inner latina ;) But very easy to understand and very pleasant to listen to, excelente! :) - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
- tiquismiquis, Feb 13, 2014
Gracias, Kiwi y tiqui, voy a intentar. - annierats, Feb 14, 2014
I thought yours was excellent! I can hear the Spanish (Spain) influence in some of your words. Very nice:) - dennywells, Feb 14, 2014
Annie, last night I wrote a comment here saying that you had a very nice and beautiful accent, and I don't see it. I'm not sure if I posted that somewhere else, or what happened. hahaha Well, now you know. :-D xxoo - 00e46f15, Feb 14, 2014

Nice job, my only suggestions would be to practice the Spanish 'd', it's not easy but rather than putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth as we do in English, concentrate on placing it at the back of your top teeth (don't touch the roof of your - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
mouth) - then you'll get that real Spanish 'd' sound'. Also with cultivo the first one was perfect but I think maybe on the last and second to last one you changed your stress a little moving it from the 'i' as it should be to the last 'o' so just watch - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
those couple of things and you'll be sounding native before you know it ;) Bien hecho Oh sorry one more thing 'aRRanca' give those double r's a good trill, unleash your inner latina jeje - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
¡Guau, actorgirl! ¡Qué diferencia respecto a ayer! - - tiquismiquis, Feb 13, 2014
Muy bien, actorgirl! ;) - 00e46f15, Feb 14, 2014

beautifully done. thank you - actorgirl, Feb 13, 2014
gracias :) You can hear that I use pronounce the 'z' as a Latin American 's' and Annierats has the Spanish from Spain 'th' going on, it's great having all the different accents isn't it :) - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
- tiquismiquis, Feb 13, 2014
Muchísimas gracias Tiquismiquis, te agradezco mucho la sugerencia :) - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 13, 2014
Very well done! - dennywells, Feb 14, 2014

This is good fun: My translation effort:

I tend to a white rose,

in June,as in January,

for my true friend

who gives me his honest hand,

And for the cruel one who rips out my living heart

I grow neither thistle nor thorn,

I offer him a white rose.

I think one has to use abit of poetic licence with the ' cultivars'. - annierats, Feb 14, 2014
;) - actorgirl, Feb 14, 2014
I like it! "Rips out my living heart" is a fairly graphic interpretation...lol. Makes me wonder how that compares with "me arranca el corazon" to the native Spanish speaker's ear:) - dennywells, Feb 14, 2014
It actually sounds really good. I was thinking that for the "cruel one" I really don't want to offer him a white rose. I don't think he deserves it. Lol ! Le cultivaré cardo y ortiga. Rosas blancas? No! Me ha arrancado el corazón! - 00e46f15, Feb 14, 2014

@actor girl , I use my own translator , - It is called my idiot brain. thanks for the great post. - ray76, Feb 14, 2014
@ Susy , sorry about the accent I shall try to open my vowels more and speak slower and clearer , just for you . - ray76, Feb 14, 2014

Here is a translation to English.

I nurture a white rose

in July as in January,

for the true friend

who offers me his loyal hand.

And for the merciless one who wrenches out

the heart by which I live,

thistle nor thorn do I nurture

for him, I nurture a white rose.

I found that it helps to read it in English to get a feel for the meaning.

thanks! Very nice - actorgirl, Feb 14, 2014
:-) - 00e46f15, Feb 14, 2014
Now I know what you look like :-) - 007c5fc1, Feb 15, 2014

That's a bit of a tongue twister. Getting from rosa to blanca quickly makes the 'English speaking' tongue what to 'pop' the b, instead of the 'soft' sound required for proper Spanish. 'Cardo ni ortiga cultivo' is also a challenge : ) Hat's off to anyone who knew what that meant without looking it up. jejeje.
