everyday spanish

Ok so like an idiot I took French in high school and then visited out west and discovered I am totally mesmerized by everything out there and plan to move there permanently. One problem, the little bit of Spanish I've managed to learn here in Ohio makes me sound like a toddler trying to be a professor (so I've been told) lol. Is there a recommendation for a "Joe Blow" approach to learning Spanish? Everything I've tried almost seems to be for Spanish speaking people who want to learn Spain's Spanish. I don't want to be a lawyer lol. I just want to be able to function normally in a Spanish speaking environment.

Welcome to SpanishDict! This is a really good question...

Have you ever stopped to think about how often we use highly complex language for everyday needs? I honestly don't think there is a "Joe Blow" approach to Spanish. You have to really commit yourself to learning it, or you won't be able to do much of anything!

I've been learning Spanish for the past 2 1/2 years, and I still can't speak very well. I can read and write fairly well, but speaking is almost out of the question. Then again, I'm not forced to use it on an everyday basis like someone who has to speak it everyday.

My advice: Enroll in some sort of Spanish class. If you're speaking Spanish everyday, you should get pretty good at it soon.
