ensuciar ( ehn-soo-see-ahr' )

verb ( to get dirty )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Subí al ático para organizarlo y me ensucié completamente.

I went up to organize the attic and I got completely dirty.

2. Conseguirle solución al problema de las pandillas en la ciudad va a requerir ensuciarse un poco las manos.

Finding a solution to the city's gang problem is going to require getting our hands dirty.

Sorry for being nitpicky, but you can't use the comma to join those two sentences together (at least, you can't in English). They have independent senses, and thus a comma is too weak to hold them together (an error also known as 'comma splice') - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
Lo siento, pero no puedes usar una coma para unir las dos frases (al menos, no puedes en inglés). Tienes sentidos distintos, y una coma no puede unirlos (se conoce este error como un 'comma splice'). - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
You can use a full-stop, relative pronoun like 'that' or a conjunction. I suggest 'that'.
That beach is one of the worst I've seen. - rac1, Feb 7, 2014
Gracias por la explicación, Neox :) Un punto interesante: Eres la única persona con que puedo hablar sin usar el traductor para nada. No estoy seguro porque, lol. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014

No me gusta que mi casa se ensucie. Tengo casi una obsesión por tenerla limpia y yo sé que está mal, pero no puedo evitarlo.

I don't like it when my house gets dirty. I am almost obsessed with keeping it clean. I know that it is not right, but I can't help it.

No problem. My obsession is the polar opposite of yours, by the way. I can't tolerate rooms without at least a slight amount of mess. In fact, I have trouble doing anything past the first 95%, which is why I often do that 5% first, lol. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
I would say 'I don't like it when my house.. or I don't like my house getting dirty. - Mardle, Feb 7, 2014

OCD as in Optimistic Cleaner Disorder, you must mean. Optimistic because I personally think everything will eventually get dirty anyway. Probably the only thing I am not optimistic about, hehe. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
Lol - rac1, Feb 7, 2014
I think it is a little bit of OCD, but I love to have this kind of OCD. I know I'm crazy. hahaha. @Annie: Si quiero ir a visitarte, y de paso puedo limpiar tu casa con muchísimo gusto. :-D Todo gratis. - 00e46f15, Feb 7, 2014

I think Annie is justified in her confusion. There are two Annies in this forum, sure, but one is Annier (if you take an extra letter from 'rats'). Fruit for thought :) - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
Your English is excellent! You write better than most native speakers. - mstivers, Feb 8, 2014

In England we would say 'made', as got isnot adequate in these cases. However, the sentence isnot really very good, I was trying to hard to come up with a current theme. - annierats, Feb 7, 2014

"Don't play in the mud" - rac1, Feb 7, 2014
"Don't you" makes it more playful, or more strict depending on context. I've frequently heard 'Don't you go playing with truants' from my parents as another possibility. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014

When my mom got older and less able to do things physically, she began to clean one room a day so her house would not get dirty.

Cuando mi mamá envejeció y tenía menos capaz a hacer cosas físicamente, empezó a limpiar una sala por día, para que su casa no se ensuciaría.
