That was the idea behind Esperanto but it is still not as popular as Zamenhoff thought it would be.

I admit that Marg's answer (¡como siempre!) is the most pragmatic and well-thought. However, I'd like to chime in with why I personally would detest a future in which we all spoke and thought in the same way. Because it would mean the destruction, or at best the desertion of a wonderful world of differences and further progress towards a cultural gelatinization that seems extremely blase and unappetizing to me.

A common language would seem like the ideal solution to promote uniformity, communication, tolerance and eliminate social diseases like racism, but I can't but help wonder whether it is just good on paper. I see people harrassing and harming each other without reason regardless of what language the other speaks. Would it matter whether someone screamed 'help', 'bachao', 'madad karo' or 'ayuda' while being robbed in open daylight? Would it stop you if you were the robber? I personally wouldn't.

You posted this in vocabulary and grammar, so I am not going to continue the philosophical discourse any longer. To answer your question, we need so many languages because there are still many thoughts in the minds of many people that simply won't find expression in any one language.

To me, it seems that such a common, shared language would cause groups of people to develop their own 'personal, with-friends-only terminology', so we will basically have dialects instead of languages that perform the same function: obscure meaning, lend subtle tones to communication, create everyday mysteries.

(get ready for a horrible Spanish translation. You have been warned)

I didn't mean to assume a grave tone, by the way. I am just too tired to break things down and write concisely. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
That's a wonderful vision Helado Electrico, I strongly agree with you, I love my native language, wich is Portuguese, but I can learn a lot with other languages, that would not happen if there was only one language at all, I'm not talking about grammar or - samrodrigue_z, Feb 7, 2014
anything else, I'm talking ideas, visions and life experiences, that are making me more sensitive to others and helping me think more clearly. - samrodrigue_z, Feb 7, 2014
@samrodrigue...I applaud your sensitivity to others, but how can you understand everyone if you don't speak their language? I'm not advocating one language, but I do see some advantages. - 0095ca4c, Feb 7, 2014
