Creation or Evolution

On Tuesday night, there was a debate between Ken Ham, the President of Answers in Genesis and Bill Nye the Science Guy. They were debating about Creation as seen in the Bible, or evolution, which is man's theory for how everything came to be in existence. It was really interesting, and you can still watch it at debatelive.org and I would really recommend watching it. It is also up on YouTube. All 900 seat tickets sold in 2 minutes, and over 5 million people watched it live. More people watched the debate than the Super Bowl on Sunday. Please watch it if you get the chance and feel free to share it with others.

- Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
I saw some of that debate. I felt like Ken Ham could have done a better job. He based all his evidence on the Bible, and while that's good, it's not going to convince an Evolutionist. - Ghosthawk, Feb 6, 2014
Nice share, AG, but I don't feel like watching a debate between two people where neither will convince the other and half the people attending will leave happy for no reason whatsoever beside feeling that their view is now 'justified'. But then again, - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
maybe when I am less tired ;) A bit of back-and-forth is always fun to watch. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
The only thing that will convince someone of anything, is themselves. - rac1, Feb 6, 2014
I personally disagree with that. I would strongly suggest watching this. - actorgirl, Feb 6, 2014
A friendly reminder... Let's stay on topic. Religion is a touchy subject, and we do not want to start any debates here. - NikkiLR, Feb 6, 2014

Nikki, good for you for having the courage to reopen this thread! If only people realized that one can be spiritual without having to belong to any religion, this constant battle - which is never won by anyone - would not take place - 005faa61, Feb 7, 2014

@tiquismiquis...are you sure we are reading the same post? It seems to me that actorgirl was asking us to watch the debate. Correcting her Spanish was a thought that she added at the end, as we all do.

I really shouldn't do this but in the interests of accuracy.

"All 900 seat tickets sold in 2 minutes, and over 5 million people watched it live. More people watched the debate than the Super Bowl on Sunday."

Just how many watched the Superbowl?

This "debate" has been raging ever since Darwin had the temerity to suggest the idea of evolution.

He was attacked then by the creationists and anyone supporting evolution as apposed to creation is still liable to being attacked.

In my opinion the acceptance of evolution does not rule out the possibility that a devine being created that.evolution.

Believe what you feel comforatble with - on either side of the debate.

I know which side I am on - even without watching a debate.

Please correct my Spanish.

Por favor, corrija mi español .

I have to agree with Ian , I have read that in the US people are turning away from

Sports events such as the super bowl . I wonder is this due to the outrageous

prices charged at such venues for second rate sports events . In my country

we are still sports mad and recently over 400 thousand tuned out for a 5 day

game , it is commonplace to attract 100 hundred thousand to a football game ,

of corse that is an Australian rules football game which is arguably a much more

exciting and watchable game than most others . I do feel sorry for the rest of

the world that have to pay exorbitant prices to watch inferior games .

Over here, we watch a lot of cricket. The main reason we don't really have interest in American football is because we don't know how it works. A bit of propaganda, and you've got yourself a new viewer-base. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
I think one reason why we Americans do not enjoy sports that much anymore, at least, our sports, is because all of the teams are really, really really excruciatingly horrible. I hate watching our sports. But I like watching other countries'. - Ghosthawk, Feb 7, 2014

Very interesting Actorgirl, thank you for sharing it with us. Although, as Nikki says this can be a 'touchy' subject I would hope that we can speak of such things without offending each other and really it is a good way to expand our vocabulary, jeje.

For me, even though I believe in Creation, i think that the belief that God created the universe in 6 days of 24 hours is based on a misunderstanding of what the Bible says.

First, the first verse of Genesis says that God 'created the heavens and the earth' but it doesn't specify how much time he took in creating it. We can see from verse two that when the first day began God had already created the universe and the earth.

Secondly, many times the Bible uses the term 'day' to speak of differing periods of time, not only of 24 hour periods. Sometimes 'a day' in the Bible is of an undetermined time period, much like we might say 'in my grandmother's day' which refers not to a day of 24 hours but an undetermined time period.

Therefore, according to my understanding the bible account of creation doesn't contradict scientific calculations and each of the 6 creative days of Genesis could have lasted thousands of years.

¡¡No duden en corregirme mi español!!

Very creative answer Kiwi, and shows a knowledge of the subject and an understanding of how sentsitive it can be in am open forum like this , which I do not think is the correct venue. - ray76, Feb 6, 2014
Your second point is something I've been talking about for a long time among peers. I don't really think religious discussion needs to devolve into flame war. We can all talk, disagree, and then walk away full of conviction :) Upvoted for useful Sp + Eng - Helado_eclectico, Feb 7, 2014
You are right. If we can't agree on it, we can at least agree that we disagree. ;) Thanks for pointing this out as a reminder. Because I do disagree with some of KG's post. :) But that is far as I will go. :) - actorgirl, Feb 7, 2014

No offence taken on my part actorgirl. It is an interesting debate and it will be a never ending debate. In my opinion, there is no substantiated proof for either side, at least none that I have seen, but I'm always willing to look. - 0095ca4c, Feb 7, 2014
Thanks. I would encourage you and everyone else to look. It can't hurt, and it is really interesting I think. the link for Answers in Genesis has some answers to questions asked in the debate, but not necessarily covered. :) - actorgirl, Feb 7, 2014
The thing is, you may post things like this if you want corrections. If your intent is just to get peple to watch the debate or discuss religion, then there might be a problem. We do not allow these kinds of things here on SD. - NikkiLR, Feb 7, 2014

Of course this is an interesting topic. After seeing the post i went to find the debate. I will keep it on the track of language and learning. Imagine this: I am a learner in Spanish and live in Mexico,I am truly fortunate to be associated with well educated open minded people. Our debates can go to the subjects of religion, politics, evolution and philosophy , and can last into the wee hours, and of course fueled with a bit of the adult beverage of choice. I suspect after a few moments of reflection, you can well imagine the problems a learner can encounter in such an environment, which of course can fall from the humorous to the sublime.
