juego ( hoo-eh'-go )

noun ( game )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

M, "mind games" en español puede decirse de varias formas: "jugando con mi mente", "jugando psicológicamente conmigo", "manipulando mi mente", "maniobrando psicológicamente", etc. Entonces, podrías decir tu oración de diferentes maneras: "No me gusta - 00e46f15, Feb 6, 2014

Me encanta ir a ver el juego de béisbol al estadio. ¡Qué lástima que siempre haya tanta gente! No me gusta estar entre la multitud de gente pero me gusta mucho el juego.

I love to go to the ballpark and watch a baseball game. It is a shame that there is always a lot of people there! I don't like crowds, but I like the game very much.

Is 'go the ballpark' some sort of baseball terminology for attending a game? Just curious. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
Thanks H. I forgot the "to". lol You thought I was speaking "Texan"? - 00e46f15, Feb 6, 2014
Lol! Well, I really thought it was baseball jargon for attending a game. My knowledge of baseball is basically "it is vaguely like cricket". - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
And being strictly nitpicky, 'there are a lot of people' is the grammatically correct version (a lot of = many). However, in informal English, you are _extremely_ likely to find the use of 'there is' (Google lists more of it because of people using inform - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
informal speech more and more everywhere). If you want to be grammatically correct, use 'there are', but if you want to give it a spoken language feel, 'there's' is just fine. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
Are you a Rangers fan susy? - Jraider, Feb 6, 2014
Normally I don't like being in a crowd either, but I went to the Olympics in London and the atmosphere was terrific, unbelivable. - annierats, Feb 6, 2014
Am I a Rangers fan??? Of course! The owner of the Rangers is my customer, so sometimes he sends tickets to us. I love, love, love the game! - 00e46f15, Feb 6, 2014
You speak Texan very well, Suzy! jejejeje - rac1, Feb 6, 2014
Lol, Annie! I am "fixing to" incorporate "y'all" to my Texan vocabulary. hahahaha - 00e46f15, Feb 6, 2014
Sylyon...in NC, it's just "Fixinta" like one word. ;) Me encanta el beisbol asi! Red Sox! - AliD, Feb 6, 2014

Sorry, I don't seem to have an exact illustration, but I feel this one makes the point quite well. - annierats, Feb 6, 2014
Annie, you could say: "A los gatos les encanta jugar con los ratones, pero los ratones no disfrutan del juego." Or: "... ratones, pero a los ratones no. " -- :-) - 00e46f15, Feb 6, 2014
@Susy: Wouldn't it change the meaning (using the second alternative) to: "The cats like to play with the mice, but the mice don't like to play with the cat'? Though they mean the same, on second thought. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
That is a big mouse! - Jraider, Feb 6, 2014
Helado, the mice don't have much option, your sentence implies they could choose. - annierats, Feb 6, 2014
Thanks, Sylyon, a very minor ' encantar' error. Again! - annierats, Feb 6, 2014

Me parece complicado. - mstivers, Feb 6, 2014
Yo tambien, mstivers. - AliD, Feb 6, 2014
@Neox: I love role-playing games/I love RPGs (in some circles I know, saying 'I love RPGs' is the only way to get your point across. Strange how that happens). - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
@mstivers: Los juegos complicados son los más divertidos, pero estoy de acuerdo que es muy difícil empezarlos si no tienes amigos que los gustan también. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
Umm, what kind of games? "roll"....:) - rac1, Feb 6, 2014
Actually, 'role-play' is another blanket term for all RPGs (well, nearly... again, some people think that role-play also involves acting, which makes the term ambiguous). Thought I'd share. - Helado_eclectico, Feb 6, 2014
