In Nicaragua it's made with rum, lime, sugar and fresh mint (herba buena) which is crushed so it releases its oil.
In Havana it's the same only with ice and they add sparkling water (mojito con agua, con gas) for tourists. This is a probably a good thing for something that is so nice on a hot day. And there's so much mint it's like a salad in a glass. A mojito fuerte (sin agua) is stronger.
In the US they call it a mojito when it's watered down rum and lime and sugar, with a tiny speck of mint floating in it.
