hacer - to ask?
This one has been bugging me for quite some time. Hacer is a great verb and has many uses, but in what way can it mean: "to ask"?
An example sentence that I have is:
Me alegro de que me hagas esa pregunta. I am glad that you asked me that questions.
I could be wrong, but this sounds very formal to me. Would "Me alegro de que me pidas esa pregunta" sound more informal?
On second thoughts, maybe the word "hacer" is used to avoid saying "...me pregunta esa pregunta", which was my original guess for a more casual translation.

To ask a question .... Hacer un pregunta / preguntar.
As Ginstaller says, "Me alegro de que me pidas esa pregunta" is totally wrong.
Pedir ... to ask for something, ie: Te pido permiso .... I am asking for your permission.
The verb "Hacer" in Spanish correspond to the English verb "To do" or "To make". the Spanish sentence is ok; but I do not think you can use either one in your English sentence. The sentence "Me alegro de que me pidas esa pregunta" is totally wrong. Hope this help.
Not a native speaker but I think that your second thought is right on point.

The consensus seems to be that there is really no difference. They mean the same thing.
pedir una pregunta is wrong
hacer una pregunta is correct
