he paid "for"

He paid for the arrows.

One answer says para and the other por. Which is correct. "por" sounds better to me--but I don't have a reason for using it. Thank you.

Por. Any exchange is marked by 'por', not 'para'.

Here, you are basically saying: He paid in exchange of the arrows. So 'por' should work.

Or neither, since pagar can mean "to pay for..."

The por is optional, I think. Unless you mention how much you are paying for something or other constructions are ambiguous, you don't need the 'por'. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 28, 2014
