lento ( lehn'-toh )

adjective ( slow )

We are looking for someone to correct the Spanish sentences. Contact me if you are interested in helping others to learn Spanish. Please help each other with corrections as you are able. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

¡Hola Lily! ¿Qué tal? :) Tu frase hoy es perfecto! Una pregunta, todavía. ¿Es 'a' entre 'gusta' y 'correr' para significar el deporte 'carrera de atletismo'? ¡Gracias! - Helado_eclectico, Jan 27, 2014
Hello Helado. Now, I'm confused :) In this sentence he likes "a correr (to run)", but I'm sure that he likes running (like a sport) too :) - 00b5f6c6, Jan 27, 2014

Estoy lento enojarse, ya veces olvidar la razón por estar enojado,

así que ¿ por qué molestarse?

I am slow to get angry, and sometimes forget the reason for being mad,

so why bother?

¡Es un hecho científico: lento y constante no gana una carrera!

It's a scientific fact: slow and steady does not win a race.

I don't know where you read the scientific evidence, but I have to disagree. I think it all depends on the end result. If you are slow at the game but finish it, you are a winner. If you are fast but you are a quitter, you lose the race. No argument. It's - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014
just my opinion...not scientific in any way lol - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014
Is this race a sprint or a marathon? Es la carrera un esprin o un maraton? - AliD, Jan 27, 2014
@AliD...either way, you have to cross the finish line to be a winner. :-) - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014

You didn't fill in your profile so I have no idea where 'your winter' is located, but I have empathy. It's so cold where I am in Canada, you can freeze boiling water instantly by throwing it up in the air. - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014
That's very cold! - rac1, Jan 27, 2014
@Margy I shall make darn sure that nothing of significance gets thrown in the air , we have " spanner water " ( wrench ) down here do you have the equivalent in freezeland ? - ray76, Jan 28, 2014
Margherite is correct bubamaria, if you do not fill out your profile we do not know if you are animal vegetable mineral , or are planet based , please fill it in mate. - ray76, Jan 28, 2014

El otro día escuché en un discurso que la razón que personas mayores son lento en su pensamiento es que han tenido más experiencas y saben más. Es como una computadora en que el memoría es lleno.

The other day I heard in a talk that the reason older people are slow in their thinking is that they have had more experiences and know more. It is like a computer in which the memory is full.

Aun si eres lento en el aprendizaje de español, no te deja vencer por el desánimo. En el tiempo cobrarás velocidad y la competencia.

Even if you are slow in learning Spanish, don't let yourself be discouraged. In time you will gain speed and proficiency.

Do you think 'adquirir' or 'obtener' would be better verbs than 'cobrar'? I understood 'cobrar' to mean - 0095ca4c, Jan 28, 2014
receive but with respect to receiving an amount of money or to collect. I hesitate to offer suggestions because I'm learning too - 0095ca4c, Jan 28, 2014
Margherite, thanks for the suggestion. I only put cobrar down as I found a sentence in a book using cobrar in relation to velocidad. However, you may be right. Obtener certainly sounds better. - 00a50c57, Jan 28, 2014

Una frase a menudo uso en el trabajo con mis clientes Hispanos es "mas lento, por favor".

A phrase I often use at work with my Hispanic clients is, "Slower, please".

*Question...in conversation, would I bother with the "Yo" before menudo, or would it just be understood?

Hi AliD. I think it would be understood. - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014
I think you need an 'a' before menudo for 'often'. To be honest, I've only seen like three or four phrases with 'menudo' in them, and they all meant 'insignificant'. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 27, 2014
Any suggestion for what to use for often in place? Veces? - AliD, Jan 27, 2014
Quízas pudiste decir 'con frecuencia uso esta frase' - 0095ca4c, Jan 27, 2014
I wouldn't use "yo", but that's just me. - rac1, Jan 27, 2014
