This week's quiz - Spanish Transitional Phrases

A good sign of fluency is the ability to make smooth transitions when conversing in your target language.

This week's quiz allows you to test your knowledge of some fairly common Spanish transitional phrases.

If you’re not familiar with many transitional phrases you might like to practice first, so I've also made some ‘Transitional Phrases Flashcards’.

I must be a bit stupid.

I think I took it. No, I did... but I didn't see the result at the end.

Thanks for the quiz!

Still broken, and highly frustrating. I spent like twenty minutes tearing my hair out before realizing that the thingies arranged themselves properly at the end of the whole thing, lol. You need to make it not do that. It is way too confusing.

ah I give up, unfortunately it's a plugin so I have no control over it and apart from that it's pretty awesome, so I've just changed the question to a multichoice like the others, I'll contact the developer though and see if he would be able to fix the - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 28, 2014
glitch as I love the concept.and he kindly makes the plugin available at no charge which is so generous. :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 28, 2014

The examples are great, and I can actually grok the significance of por último over al fin. al fin/finalmente carries a connotation that you were/someone was waiting for the event to occur. - helado electrico

Well done, although I'm not sure what grok means jeje

Esto es lo que dice la RAE:

fin.

In other words "al fin" means "at last" after overcoming all obtacles, while "por fin" means "at last" something you have been waiting for finally happened.

Actually I've gone back and refined that question as I think it could have been clearer and I've added more info which I hope will help.

From what I saw on the net, por fin is used _way_ more than al fin. Al fin only ever gets used with 'y al cabo' in a 'after all is said and done' style. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 27, 2014

No. 7 still has problems.

my answer answer key

The examples are great, and I can actually grok the significance of por último over al fin. al fin/finalmente carries a connotation that you were/someone was waiting for the event to occur.

Necesitabamos agua para dos días, pero no llovía. Al fin/Finalmente, llovió el lunes ~ We needed water for two days, but it did not rain. At last, it rained on Monday. - rain was being expected/hoped for

Por último has the connotation of 'in the final place/time or 'after everything else had occurred'.

Comí carne de vaca, arroz y por último helado. ~ I ate beef, rice and finally ice-cream. - the eating wasn't being hoped for/aspired, but it occurred after all the events

Of course, I am not sure about this intuition, so if there's anything wrong with it, please don't hesitate in pointing that out. Once again, thanks KG!

Also, scored 170/200. Not too shabby :) - Helado_eclectico, Jan 27, 2014
Oh my goodness what is wrong with that silly question lol, ok I'll have one more go at fixing it, I'll delete that one and re type the whole thing and see if that fixes it, if not I'll just delete it, it's a shame though as I like the idea of that format - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 27, 2014
Ok I've redone it please let me know if it works now. If not I'm wondering if it's because that's the only question with a clue, maybe the plugin has a glitch but I'll wait and see how it works now, plan b remove the hint lol. - Kiwi-Girl, Jan 27, 2014
