The verb "dejar" requires direct object or indirect?

I saw this phrase in a Spanish site: "Ellos dejan al perro dormir en su cama", the verb "dejar" requires DO or IO? It seems to me that when a DO is a person, then it requires A in front of the object, but in this case "perro" is not a person, so I'm lost why it's "al perro" instead of "el perro".

Perro is the indirect object here. Pets are many times treated as a family member, so the personal "a" can be used in these cases.
