Three examples:
"Tesis" It's a thriller, about a girl who is writing her disertacion about violence in movies (snuff movies) and she discovers something that puts her in a difficult situation.
"El laberinto del fauno" It's a fantasy drama, and that takes place in 1940s (the Civil Spanish War has just finished). So it's a mix beetween fantasy and Spanish history.
"Todo sobre mi madre" It's about a woman who is a single mother, and whose son decides to search his father, who is a transvestite.
Tienes tambien el capitan alatriste de Viggo Mortensen pero es una produccion hipano americana y a mi me gusta bastante, basada en las novelas de Arturo Pérez Reverte
Do you mean from Spain or world wide?
El espíritu de la colmena -
an old film 1973. Unusual as made while Franco still alive. A 7 year old girl having watched a film starts fantasising, but not clear where fantasy stops and reality intervenes. Its takes place in 1940. The actress playing the girl is amazing. A young Ana Torrent
Volver -
Pedro Almodovar - I have seen most of his films but they are often weird!! It gives an amazing insight into the claustrophobia of a small town in Southern Spain it is at time tragic [you won't believe what Penelope Cruz does! ]But also funny and joyful
I could fill your thread but will add more later
Solas - (Drama) The story of Maria, her mother and the father (violent and abusive man) in 1999.
El día de la bestia - (Comedy) A priest obsessed with the Cabala prophecies convinced that Satan's spawn will be born somewhere in Madrid on Christmas Day of 1995.
Crónica del rey pasmado - (Historical-comedy) 17th Century, Philip IV, King of Spain decides to see the naked body of his wife.
Los santos inocentes (Drama)- In the sixties. A married and 3 children live on a ranch where they dutifully serve an upper-class family.
La caza - (Drama) In the sixties, 3 friends with problems go huntig together...
Plácido (Comedy) In the sixties, a group of old ladies decide to celebrate Christmas Eve with a "Sit poor man at your table"...
El Norte is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Two Mayan Indian peasants, a brother and sister narrowly escape a Guatemalan army massacure. Thus begins their harrowing journey to "El Norte".
Desaparecida is not a movie, it is a thirteen part TV series from Spain. It's the story of a girl who goes missing after going out for an all-nighter on her 18th birthday. In my opinion it is a masterpiece that puts Hollywood to shame. Watch it on hulu with sub-titles to expierence the beauty of the Spanish language as spoken in Spain.
