principio ( preen-see'-pee-oh )

noun ( beginning; principle )

We are looking for someone to correct the Spanish sentences. Contact me if you are interested in helping others to learn Spanish. Please help each other with corrections as you are able. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words!

Examples:

1. Cada vez que me enfermo, lo que me duele al principio es la garganta.

Every time I get sick, what hurts first is my throat.

2. Ese tipo no tiene principios; haría cualquier cosa para ganar dinero.

That guy doesn't have any principles; he'd do anything to make some money.

Desde el principio los profesores sabían que el no va a ser un buen arquitecta, pero quien podría esperar esto?

From the begining the professors knew that he would not be a good architect, but who would expect this?

Will there be 'un buen' or simply 'buen' (also, will or would in the English sentence?)? Regardless, I laughed. Now that's what I call a unique perspective ;) - Helado_eclectico, Jan 9, 2014

En la principio sentí el espíritu de amor.

Teniendo que vivir sin amar ,

es como vivir sin respirar.

In the beginning, I felt the spirit of love,

Having to live without loving ,

It is like living without breathing.

Arquímedes, uno de los más grandes matemáticos de la antigua Grecia, descubrió el principio de la flotabilidad, hace más de 2.000 años. Este principio es importante conocer, especialmente si vuelas globos de aire caliente!

Archimedes, one of the greatest mathematicians in Ancient Greece, figured out the principle of buoyancy more than 2,000 years ago. This principle is important to know, especially if you fly hot air balloons!

Al principio los bebés no pueden decirnos mucho, pero con tiempo los bebés y las mamas empiezan a communicarse.

To start with babies can't tell us much, but in time the babies and the mothers start to communicate with each other.

Thank you, Helado. You're right, but translations don't have to be literal. It's a good idea to use appropriare words in English. - Raja-jani, Jan 9, 2014
:D I was just wondering whether it would be 'combatir contra' rather than just combatir in the spanish version. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 9, 2014
