Game: Names for - Groups of Birds

Game: Names for - Groups of Birds

I am new to this, so if anyone wants to chip in, edit or correct feel free. This is inspired by a question about the phrase 'Murder of Crows'. NB. most of the bird ones can also be covered by the word 'flock' so there is no need to learn all the other collective nouns.

Use an expression for a group of birds, add the phrase in Spanish, and a photo would finish it off a treat. If you want to use phrases from the original question, please do. If it is popular I thought we could do another one with animals and one for fish.

Ponga la palabra en inglés y español por el nombre de un grupo de aves. Añada un foto [si le gusta] Buena suerte

To start off:
A murmuration of starlings

Bandadas de estorninos.

if anyone wants to explain [simply] how I add Hyperlinks ... - Mardle, Jan 7, 2014
I give up. I tried. I lost 10 points and I cannot delete the post!! Bye - Mardle, Jan 7, 2014
For hyperlinks right click on the address in your browser and select copy. - dennywells, Jan 7, 2014
then click on the 'little world' above the "answer question window" and paste the hyperlink address. - dennywells, Jan 7, 2014
Were it says " enter link description here" in the 'answer window', type that over with whatever you want your description to be :) - dennywells, Jan 7, 2014
I don't get it. The address you provided works. Not sure what "NB" means. Comma here or there, no big deal. :) - dennywells, Jan 7, 2014
When posting, please add both English and Spanish. This is a language learning site. - rac1, Jan 7, 2014
Many members are posting their games without any Spanish attempts on the posters part. Please try and include a portion of your introduction in Spanish. ¡Tu juego es muy creativo! ¡Bien hecho! - bandit51jd, Jan 8, 2014
Ya entiendo. Mardle, no trastornarte la mente, no es cosa grande :) - dennywells, Jan 8, 2014
I love the wioord ' murmuration'. The farmers love the murmurations rather less, when they land in the grainstores. - annierats, Jan 8, 2014

In Spanish usually "bandada" will do for any group of birds and I think they have to be flying...else it is just a grupo/conjunto de aves.

In English there are many words to describe a group. I think this exercise is geared towards English-learners. - AlyssaLTerry, Jan 7, 2014
Both... we learn too, what do you think? ;) - chileno, Jan 8, 2014
I don't know how varied the words are for the Spanish equivalent, but it is more divers in English + we can learn bird names - Mardle, Jan 12, 2014
Yes, I have now looked a few up, Chileno, and they don't seem to exist in Spanish. At least the birds do! - annierats, Jan 13, 2014

From the looks on their faces, they are planning worse than murder D: I, for one, welcome our avian overlords. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 8, 2014
I think it should be "parvada" or "bandada". "Asesinato" isn't a group of crows. :) - comunacho, Jan 13, 2014
@ comunacho, you are correct but the English have special names for groups of animals , and for Crows it is a " Murder of crows " therefore the Spanish needs to comply in this instance. - ray76, Jan 13, 2014

I think that it needs to be pointed out to Spanish natives that these

collective groupings in English cannot be adequately translated into spanish ,

as a few of our friends have pointed out , although they are totally correct in

using " Bandada, or parvada" the collective nouns in English are for the most

part comedic and descriptive . But I stand to be corrected and accept the verdict.

In the introduction I put that the word 'flock' generally covered a group of birds. Alyssa has a link to a site that explains it perfectly. I had hoped native speakers of Spanish would tell us the collective nouns in Spanish eg I found manada for geese - Mardle, Jan 13, 2014
manada is any flock of animals, Mardle. Ray and Chileno are right. - annierats, Jan 13, 2014

I think it should be pointed out that us native speakers almost never use the majority of these collective nouns because we don't know them and never hear most of them.

Creo que hay que señalar que nos hablantes nativos casi nunca usamos la mayoría de estos nombres colectivos porque no los conocemos y nunca escuchamos la mayoría de ellos.

This is just a fun posting.

I mentioned it in the introduction and Alyssa put a good link in her post. I don't know the Spanish words or where they are used eg in English you don't have a flock of cows but do sheep or birds - Mardle, Jan 13, 2014
You're wrong; shooting people always use them. - annierats, Jan 13, 2014
it's because you never go shooting, Ian. - annierats, Jan 13, 2014

Comunacho , no mate I am wanting you to come up with your own collective nouns , otherwise there will simply be a list on animals with only 3 or 4 names to describe them , this is a great post but requires imagination and invention , you are up to it. - ray76, Jan 13, 2014
I had intended to run another game for animals ....hope people still post as for me it is a way of improving my vocabulary and seeing some lovely pics. - Mardle, Jan 13, 2014
