partido ( pahr-tee'-doh )

noun ( group, party; (sports) match )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words!

Examples:

1. Me parece que en este país hace falta un tercer partido; necesitamos una voz más moderada.

I think that this country is sorely lacking a third party; we need a more moderate voice.

2. Es mi sueño poder asistir al partido de la final de una copa del mundo.

It's my dream to be able to go to the final match of a World Cup.

Me aburren los partidos de fútbol, no me importa si los jugadores se hacen milionarios o no..

Football games bore me, it doesn't matter to me if the players become millionaires or not.

Al contrario de las creencias populares, hay más que un partido en dictadura por ejemplo, partido de baloncesto, partido de fútbol, partido de tenis. Todavia, hay un diferencia. Otros partidos están solo entre los jugadors, en tanto que dictadura es entre los jugadors y los espectadores.

Contrary to popular belief, there are more contests than just one in dictatorship for example, a football match, a basketball match, a tennis match. Still, there's a difference. Other contests take place only between the participants, while dictatorship is a match between the participants and the spectators.

That's why puns don't translate well, I see. headscratch

I feel a tiny bit stupid. Creo que estoy un poco tonto.

When you can understand puns and humor, you know ypu are close to fluency. I'll never understand British humor, so I can't really be fluent in English! :)) - Noetol, Jan 5, 2014
I get it. Doesn´t work in English though. - mstivers, Jan 5, 2014
Yes you can. - rac1, Jan 5, 2014
Thanks, guys! :D Personally, I find puns very funny, but most other people seem to respond with groans whenever I try one >.< (I flatter myself that they are usually better than this one, though) - Helado_eclectico, Jan 6, 2014

El partido es terminado , es la vez a llamarme lo un día.

The party is over, it's time to call it a day.

Lo siento Ian mate , pero las cenizas son los nuestros ahora.

El partido es terminado para dos años.

The trophy is symbolic rac, the glass trophy is the one that the team keeps , the little one with ashes in it is given to the victor to keep until the next game in two years time. - ray76, Jan 6, 2014

Esta bien pero en este caso "Party" se traduce como "grupo" ; ) sigue asi - Neox, Jan 5, 2014
Neox, this is an American Ute Indian "War Party", translates "partido de la guerra" No? Please advise. And thanks! - jrschenk, Jan 5, 2014
If so, perhaps I should have been clearer that this was a "Party, a number of persons confederated" - jrschenk, Jan 5, 2014
Si, entonces puede ser una "partida de guerra" o "Partidarios belicistas" si es party como numero de personas entonces se traduciría como "grupo" que es lo que pensé que querías decir, muy bien : ) - Neox, Jan 5, 2014
Mil gracias, Neox, agradezco la ayuda de un hablante nativo y editar la frase como usted sugiere. - jrschenk, Jan 5, 2014
War party? - rac1, Jan 5, 2014
Yeah, you know they were terrorists. : ) - Ranman, Jan 5, 2014
rac1, yes. Google "ute war party 1899 photo" Ranman, they were on the government's "Watch List" ;) - jrschenk, Jan 5, 2014

Aquí no estoy seguro de que la traducción sea partido : s no entiendo la frase en Ingles pero creo que en este caso no se traduce como "partido" ¿podéis ponerme otro ejemplo de lo que quiere decir en este contexto i'm looking for my party"? - Neox, Jan 5, 2014
Where"s the sign? - Jraider, Jan 5, 2014
Estoy en acuerdo, Neox. Creo que no debe ser ''partido" sino "grupo" ("I am looking for my people"). Creo que la traducción todavia significa algo. - Helado_eclectico, Jan 5, 2014
En este contexto, "party" significa solo un individual, una persona. Por ejemplo, un chófer que está buscando su cliente puede decir "I am looking for my party". - Noetol, Jan 5, 2014
Noetol, gracias por la explicación sobre "partido." - SaigeSmith, Jan 5, 2014
