"Solo mate" as in No way!

Question

Solo mate (no accent presented) can mean You like it? or Seriously? No way! according to a Nicaraguan friend. Anyone know this phrase? I am wondering how this phrase comes about. The only thing I pick up on this is a preterite form of matar, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

Looks it you're on track and in this case it has nothing to do with Mate from Argentina.

It isn't much, but this confirms what your friend told you. As for the origin of the phrase, good luck.

Bueno el Mate es una bebida popular en Latinoamérica

Si no es eso o el verbo matar no se a que se puede referir a no ser que se trate de una expresión que usen allí

No te puedo decir exactamente, algún amigo latinoamericano lo sabrá mejor, pero es como el "Té" hierba de mate, agua caliente, el tradicional esta hecho de calabaza curada, no te puedo decir como sabe porque no lo he tomado nunca jaja - Neox, Jan 2, 2014

Como dice Neox, probablemente sea la bebida, pero tenemos también la frase 'Jaque -mate' en ajedrez. Checkmate??
