problem telling whether i can use the subjunctive
Can you use the subjunctive in I hope that I can visit New Zealand again? can I have a explanation if that's no trouble?

Yes. If you use ' Espero que.. ' it would normally be followed by the subjunctive. Espero que pueda visitar a Nueva..
Or, just do as Kiwi says, because if I talk about myself, as I usually do, I can rabbit on without using the subjunctive.
If there's no change if subject (ie. When the subject in the principal clause and the subordinate clause is the same) you can avoid the subjunctive by simply using the infinitive and dropping the que. This is usually the best way to construct these kinds of sentences.

It's also interesting to note that esperar followed by the subjunctive is often understood to express hope but followed by the indicative it would likely mean to expect.
