alemán ( ah-leh-mahn' )

adjective ( German )

Sylyon1976 is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to her suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words!

Examples:

1. Uno de mis postres favoritos para comer durante las Navidades es el stollen, un pan alemán con fruta seca y mazapán que se cubre con polvo de azúcar.

One of my favorite desserts to eat during Christmastime is stollen, a German bread with dried fruit and marzipan and covered with powdered sugar.

2. Unos amigos y yo tenemos planes de ir a Munich el año que viene para el Oktoberfest y disfrutar de lo mejor (o lo peor) de la cultura alemana.

Some friends and I are planning to go to Munich next year for Oktoberfest to experience the best (or worst) of German culture.

A mi no me gusta el pastel alemán. En realidad, no me gusta ningún tipo de comida que contenga coco como ingrediente.

I don't like German chocolate cake. Actually, I don't like any kind of food that has coconut as an ingredient.

We'd make a great team for dessert tasters. I'll take care of the coconut end, okay? - SaigeSmith, Dec 31, 2013
That works for me! :-) - 00e46f15, Dec 31, 2013
I´m with you. Can´t stand coconut on cake or deserts. Unless it´s just a bit on top and well toasted and crispy, in which case it´s good. Same way I feel about Napoles, so it must be a texture thing. - rogspax, Jan 1, 2014

Aunque me parece el alemán más difícil aprender que el español, era más fácil aprender el alemán en Alemania que el español en estados unidos.

Although I think German is more difficult to learn than Spanish, it was easier to learn German in Germany than Spanish in the U.S.

Here we are in Monchengladbach (sp?) in East Germany, I think in early ´90 just after the wall fell, and drinking with the locals. We were the first yanks there since just after the war, and Wolf, on the left who was from there, was my apartment mate while studying in West Germany.

enter image description here

And then with the town Mayor, who made two of us honorary citizens at their local Stadtfest, where we went to literally every little Häuschen in the village and snacked and drank. This toast started the event anew at each house.

Good times.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! What a wonderful memory you had when you studied in Germany! I wish I knew some basic German words. - joygogo, Jan 1, 2014
Thanks all. Yes, I could use a bit of that youth back. I was very lucky to be at the right place at the right time. In Germany for the fall of the wall, the reunification, and able to speak to locals on both sides as it all happened. - rogspax, Jan 1, 2014
I was lucky to get to visit much of the East while it was still the East: East Germany, Chechoslovakia, Hungary, Estonia, and best of all, Russia, back when not many westerners had been there. Lucky boy. - rogspax, Jan 1, 2014

Hay un tipo de pantalones cortos alemanes llamada ledehosen. Tengo un par de éstos, pero no me gusta ponérmelos. Pienso que la ropa tradicional de las mujeres alemanes es mucho más atractiva.

Here in the US, pants are indeed trousers, jeans, or shorts. Not underwear. Those would be boxers, briefs, tighty-whities, or for girls panties or thongs. But pants are always outerwear. - Noetol, Dec 31, 2013

Las bromas acerca de salchicha alemanas son las peores.

Jokes about German sausage are the wurst.

(Explanation: "Wurst" and "worst" are similar. So the pun works in English. Please add comment if you can make it work in Spanish.)

¡Hola, amiga!
Gracias. - Jubilado, Dec 31, 2013
