Keeping track of time

Hola a todos,

I was trying to describe the job of an Umdze (time keeper) in a meditation hall and I realized that I have no idea how to say "keep track of time." (For those of you who do not know, and Umdze is a person that signals the start and end of a sitting or walking meditation period in a meditation hall.)

Would I say something like,

Un Umdze is una persona que mantiene la noción del tiempo.

I could probably do a work around (e.g. Un Umdze es una persona que da el señal para cuando un periodo de meditación empieza y cuando termina) but I would like to know how to express this concept.

I believe "marcar el tiempo" is the term for keep track of time.
