I believe the answers are as follows:

1) Compré (specified time, e.g. ayer, la semana pasada etc.) 2) Era (physical condition, description) 3) Fuimos (specified time, we went to the movies rather than they went, therefore fuimos. 4) Comíamos (an action that a person did habitually in the past, no specified time frame) 5) Estuvo (specified time frame; after the exam) 6) Llamó (something was going on when something else happened, completed action) 7) Era (time is always expressed with ser, era is the imperfect of ser) 8) Fueron (specified time; el año pasado)
