In general, to say 1 in Spanish and nothing is following it, it's uno. If something follows it, it becomes un. Ex. Tengo uno. vs. Tengo un perro.
So, when you're just saying the number alone, it's cuarenta y uno. If you have an item following the number (like 41 years), it becomes cuarenta y un años
