Dominican Spanish?
jo quiero? I have only been studying Spanish for a short time but, on a recent holiday to Dominican Republic it seems all I have learnt seemed alien to the locals who frequently gave me different ways of saying things in Spanish. Jo quiero = I want?

Never mind.
Some native speakers will pronounce the letter "y" like an English "j." This isn't unique to the Dominican Republic, in fact, it's very common to pronounce it like this in many different Spanish-speaking countries. People also tend to pronounce the Spanish "ll" like the English "j" in "jeans." In Argentina, both "ll" and "y" are pronounced like "sh."

Yo quiero is universal Spanish : I want , I like, I love.. No different in the Dominican Republic.
I had a neighbor from Argentina who pronounced yo with the 'j' sound. It actually sounded pretty cool.
