Correct word for sheriff

I need to use the word sheriff in a forum post for my schoolwork. I put it into the translator, and all these different words came up, and I am confused if I am supposed to use sheriff, or alguacil.

Both are fine, sheriff obviously has been accepted from English whereas 'alguacil' is the actual Spanish word.

Isn't 'alguacil' also the word for bailiff; and doesn't, 'comer más que un alguacil' connote 'to eat like a horse,' 'to make a pig of oneself?' - jstackiv, Dec 4, 2013
