Diferente means ' different'. It's practially it's only meaning.
Mis hermanas y yo son personas muy diferentes. ( My sisters and I are very different sorts of person).
Distinto can mean : different, various, clear, understandable, separate and so on..
A mi me gusta escuchar las noticias en la televisión, porque hablan un castellano distinto y claro . ( I like listening to the news on telly, because they speak very clearly.)
He tenido consejo de varios tipos distintos. ( I have had advice of various types).
