"Please remove muddy footwear..."

I need to post a sign up at the front entrance of a building and would like some opinions/corrections/suggestions on the following sentence which I have translated from English into Spanish:

  • Please clean or remove muddy footwear before entering the building.
  • Option 1: Por favor, limpie o quítese calzados llenos de barro antes de entrar el edificio.
  • Option 2: Favor de limpiar o quitarse (sus) zapatos sucios antes de entrar el edificio.

Thank you in advance!

I would make it real simple: Favor de quitarse los calzados sucios antes de entrar el edificio.

I agree with Gringo, they won´t clean them. "Calzado" is a better option because it indicates all types of footwear - shoes, boots, etc.

The reason why I have "clean" listed is because there is a permanent brush station installed at the front of the office. you put your fut inside and move it back and forth and 4 brushes scrape the mud off. - AlyssaLTerry, Nov 21, 2013
**put your foot inside** (sorry for the typo) - AlyssaLTerry, Nov 21, 2013
And yes, workers with muddy boots do clean them before entering the building. The sign is more of a formality for guests. - AlyssaLTerry, Nov 21, 2013
In that case "Favor de quitarse los calzados sucios o limpiárselos antes de entrar el edificio." - 005faa61, Nov 21, 2013

Having spent years on construction sites I can tell you that asking guys to clean their shoes before entering is a waste of time. They will do a quick stomp and come on in. On the other hand asking them to remove their steel toed boots will be completely ignored.

Having said that I would go with option 2, include the sus.

I like the second option.i would use Por in front. you can use "sus" in both sentences so it doesnt have to be in parentheses though. i.e. Por favor quitese o limpie sus zapatos sucios antes de entrar a el edificio. This is how i would say it to someone. I could be wrong though.
