Pattern/Patrón

Pattern/Patrón

This is a pre school skill/activity and I am not sure how to convey the idea in Spanish.
In English the teacher would say something like "Billy can create and extend patterns" A child is given a pattern, say a row of dots on a page. One red dot then a green dot and then a red dot... etc. Then the child is asked what comes next. My dificulty is with the idea of "pattern" My understanding is that "patrón" is like a sewing pattern. would sound better to say "Billy puede hacer y seguir una sequencia." or would "patrón" work with this idea.
Gracias antemano por la ayuda.

El patrón or el modelo would work in this case.

If this exercise were more of a design nature, then you could use el diseño.

Good question and answer. I¨ve been wondering about patterns, as in perhaps, seeing patterns in the way verbs change ending to be nouns or vice-versa (such as pensar and pensamiento). Patrón works here? Thanks! - rogspax, Nov 6, 2013
Thank you so very much. It is a pre reading and pre math skill. Esentually if the child can recognize these simple patterns it will help them recognize patterns of letters in order to read. Patrón just always felt odd. Thanks for the help. - deedeegill72, Nov 6, 2013

I watch a lot of children's TV in Spanish with my granddaughter and the shows always use patrón for exactly what you described in your question.

Patrón is fun for big kids, too.
