You seem to have missed a bit of info in your question.

The Preterite and imperfect are two of the spanish past tenses and are the difference between such sentences as, I ate (yo comí - Preterite tense of comer) and I was eating (yo comía - imperfect tense of comer).

There obviously is a lot more to it than that but perhaps it will get you started and here's a more complete lesson if you'd like to know more.
