Is it expected/impolite to correct?

I am brand new to both this site and learning Spanish. As a native English speaker, I hope that my posts will be corrected by other users if they see a grammar error by responding with a comment, and I see others doing this.
Is this common/expected on this site as we are all helping each other learn another language? I don't want to point out an English mistake and have it be taken offensively by another user.
