What helped you learn?

Besides sitting in front of a text book, what actions helped you learn the most?

I really want to concentrate as much of my time on doing things that will help me learn. Hanging around with Spanish speakers isn't much of an option until winter vacation...so besides that, what really helped you bring it all together.

What interests you? If you're a football fan, learn the Spanish vocabulary for that. Then read online the news about various football teams. You'll learn the words because you are interested and you'll read because you are interested. When you come across words you don't know, you'll be able to figure them out from context, and those will stick in your brain more than words looked up in a dictionary. Then try and watch football on TV, or listen on the radio during football games. It's easier to study something if you're interested in it...

Try to listen to some Spanish every day, whether it's TV or radio. You may not be able to understand much (I still don't) but it gets you used to hearing the sounds, you feel good when you recognize words and phrases. You also learn not to try and translate word by word, but listen for the gist of the sentence, which will help you when you get to your winter vacations.
