"A" Pronunciation

I understand (I think lol) that the "A" in Spanish sounds similar to the "ah" in English, but it seems to me that if the "A" comes before "LL" it changes to an English "I" sound. Like in Hallar, Callar and Etc. Can someone tell me if I'm on the right track with this thought ?

hallar = [ai-yar], so LL is pronounced like I in diphtongue sounds like [ai] [oi] [ei] ... like in ache, appointment, hire ...

llamar [ia-mar] lleno [ieno], cuello [kue-io] callar [ka-iar]

Well haller is almost like you say but it is still, when broken down a short a sound. It is when you are trying to combine it with the ll (el-ya) it comes out sounding a bit like i (eye). check out the prununciation in the translator
