United States proverbs

Hey everyone!

I have this interesting homework assignment, I'm supposed to find American (United States) proverbs and then find the Latin American or Spanish equivalent. I've thought of some, but seeing as how my family never really used proverbs I've gotten stuck. I need 50 and here is what I have:

You can lead a horse to water but you can't teach it to drink Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. A watched pot never boils You catch more flies with honey than vinegar

I don't need the Spanish equivalent (I probably should do my own homework), but as you can see I'm 45 short. I tried googling proverbs but the only thing that came up was the book of the bible and a bunch of short stories. Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: I've changed the post, I meant proverbs and I look up proverbs. Sorry I wrote the wrong thing, I was kind of out of it at the time. Thanks for your help so far.

You might try the library. This appears to be a hard assignment. Good luck. Sorry I can't help. I don't even know the definition of parable. - gringojrf, Oct 25, 2013
Yes, I really did mean proverbs. Oops. :) - Vida_de_Scott, Oct 27, 2013

Try googling sayings, or axioms or proverbs I think one of these words is better than "parables" according to your examples. I hope I'm not "throwing pearls before swine" ha, ha.

Are you sure it's parables you're looking for? "Proverbs" or "adages" seems more likely. Anyway, here's a list that might prove useful: 1001 truisms
